You should really read Thornberg and Forrester's comprehensive case study about this project to get a sense of the scope of this mini-series.
This was an awesome project to be a part of. It effectively consumed all of 2017 for me. I was humbled to be working alongside so many other freelancers who I admire tremendously. I had never worked on a large scale piece like this before. The directors and producers of this managed it so well. I can't say enough about how much I enjoyed working with the team that put this together!
First of all, I've never worked with such a well developed character rig than this hero rig that Ken Krueger and Gerald Soto created. It was phenomenal.
As you might expect, there is an amalgam of animators' work represented here and very few scenes had just one animator bringing it from soup to nuts. Most of the long scenes I spearheaded were in Chapters 2-4, but I had a little bit to do in all chapters.
In Chapter 2, I did the stylized silhouette jump sequence around 2:40 and was responsible for assembling the long thought bubble sequence afterwards; however, I did not do the three mountain climbing shots where you see the hero from the back. I did do the shot of the hero struggling and failing to push himself at 3:21 and onward until the moment where he transitions from the lotus position to the "hand-on-knee" sitting position; the amazing Anne Calandre did that move!
In Chapter 3, I handled the hero running up the line and tripping on the rock up until the point where the camera zooms into the thought bubble. I did so many versions of that until Ray Dalio's team liked it. I initially had some pretty exaggerated, dramatic falls! The thought bubble sequence was done by animation director Mike Burgoyne and the "climb, point, jump, climb and run" action at 1:11 was masterfully done by Andy Kennedy who's truly flexing his character animation talent in that moment in my opinion. I handled the falling sequence from about 2:22 onward where you see the first of many C4D spirals I made.
In Chapter 4, I handled all the animation up until 0:38 where the character crashes into the camera. Let me tell you, that spiral was not easy to get right! :-)
