So I randomly met Jason Hicks backstage at ACL one year and we started talking. One of his passion projects was putting on Pink Floyd tribute concerts. He had already done an "Animals" tribute show at the Seaholm Power Plant before it went through its major renovation and we was trying to figure out a way to do a live version of the infamous "Dark Side of the Moon" + "Wizard of Oz" mashup. I told him about the live event work David Crumley was pursuing at Houndstooth and the collaboration took off from there.
Here was the challenge: The Wizard of Oz was under projection rights lock down because it was celebrating its 75th Anniversary. We had to get creative. Instead of doing a "1 to 1" screening of the film itself, we came up with original projection loops and effects that were evocative of the chronological moments in the film and we timed them to the band as they played.
David put an exceptional amount of trust in me to take the reigns on this project. We had just begun using Resolume Arena for projection mapping and VJing and we decided that would be the best option for this event.
I rehearsed after work for a week playing my animations alongside Youtube versions of "Dark Side of the Rainbow." The event was a blast! I had a lot of fun coordinating with the Lighting Designer for the show and everyone in attendance was thrilled.
